Thirty cars. That’s the entire run. And every one of them was spoken for before the world had laid eyes on the thing.

The Mercedes-AMG CLE 646 Spezialanfertigung was revealed in Affalterbach on September 10, 2026, and it did not arrive the way most halo cars arrive. There was no product plan calling for it. No gap in the lineup that needed filling. A small group inside the AMG engineering team wanted to know how far a CLE could be pushed toward pure driving dynamics, built a prototype to find out, and the answer turned into a production car. AMG’s own leadership has described it as rational engineers chasing a deeply irrational idea.

In our view, it’s the most extreme road-legal coupé Affalterbach has ever put its name on.

A 646 PS V8 With a Flat-Plane Crank

The heart of it is a heavily reworked AMG 4.0-litre V8 biturbo, the M177 EVO, producing 646 PS (475 kW, roughly 637 hp) and 850 Nm of torque available from 2,500 to 4,500 rpm. That output is where the name comes from.

The interesting part isn’t the number. It’s the flat-plane crankshaft, which cuts rotating mass and sharpens throttle response in a way a cross-plane V8 simply can’t match. Cooling was reinforced across all three circuits for sustained track abuse in high ambient temperatures. The exhaust is a high-flow system with a cold end developed alongside Akrapovič, with titanium doing double duty on sound and weight.

Nine-speed AMG SPEEDSHIFT TCT handles the shifting. Zero to 100 km/h takes 3.9 seconds, 200 km/h arrives in 11.4, and it runs on to 310 km/h.

AMG Deliberately Removed All-Wheel Drive

Here’s the decision that defines the car. The 4MATIC+ system from the donor CLE is gone completely. The CLE 646 sends everything to the rear axle and nothing else, managed by an electronically controlled limited-slip differential that will support controlled drifts when conditions allow.

Nobody removes all-wheel drive from a 646 PS coupé by accident. AMG did it to shed weight and to change the character of the car entirely, and it sits alongside a wider programme of subtraction. Around 170 kilograms came out. The rear seats are gone. The acoustic insulation is gone. The sound system was cut down. Every driver assistance and comfort feature was stripped, right down to the parking sensors. Kerb weight lands at 1,895 kg.

The bodyshell went the other way. It was reinforced and widened by 60mm at each axle, with a roll cage bonded into the structure for torsional rigidity. Carbon covers the wings, bonnet, roof, front apron, rear diffuser, boot lid and the manually adjustable rear wing. The rear side windows and rear screen are polycarbonate.

A Chassis Built With KW Automotive

The suspension is a steel coilover setup co-developed with KW automotive, running four-way damping with independently adjustable low and high speed compression and rebound. In practical terms, an owner can tune body control and bump response separately, for a specific circuit or a specific driving style.

Braking is handled by AMG’s ceramic composite system, 420 x 40mm discs with six-piston fixed calipers up front and 360 x 32mm at the rear, finished in gold, fed by dedicated ducting in the front bumper.

Wheels are 11.0J x 20 front and 12.0J x 20 rear, wrapped in 305/30 and 335/30 rubber developed from the tyre technology created for the Mercedes-AMG ONE. The compound is exclusive to this car.

Aerodynamics Tuned for the Circuit

The front diffuser adjusts manually between Street and Race settings. In Race, it extends downward into an inverted wing profile that accelerates airflow under the nose and generates front downforce through the Venturi effect. Combined with the adjustable centre section of the rear wing, flat underbody and longitudinal fins, the car produces well over 250 kilograms of downforce at top speed.

Traction control is separated from ESP and offers nine levels of rear slip, adjustable as tyre temperature builds.

The Second Car in the Mythos Series

The CLE 646 is the second model in the Mercedes-Benz Mythos series, following the 250-unit AMG PureSpeed. Each one is hand-built at Affalterbach on a CLE 53 base, finished in Mojave Silver magno at the nose and Obsidian Black magno from the B-pillar back.

Thirty units. All sold. That’s the part that should worry every manufacturer still trying to build demand after the product exists.

If a car like this is the kind of thing you’d want a proper introduction to rather than a press release about, that’s exactly what BlinkCo Access exists for.
